Guidance Testimonial

I was asked to look at P&I Physical Intervention guidance during October 2015. I was asked to look at the guidance from a safety point of view and give my opinion on whether or not it is appropriate to inform the trainees on safety measures that must be in place if they were to physically intervene with a child or young person. I have no experience with Physical Intervention but I am currently working as a specialist nurse in trauma.
My findings were as follows: Every piece of guidance given has been designed with the safety of the service user at heart. I particularly like the fact that all of the guidance is designed to cause minimal discomfort or pain to the young people. Positional asphyxia and damage to bones is discussed at length and I came away from my discussion feeling confident that if P&I training methods were carried out, as described, then the risk to children and young people is minimal. I have no experience at de-escalation but felt confident that if I could put into practice the strategies that I was shown then I could effectively resolve most concerns without the need for physical intervention.

I am supporting P&I training to become a leading provider in delivering de-escalation strategies and techniques on how to prevent Physical Intervention when working with children and young people.
